OFFICE PROFILE:

The firm of Hospice Design Resource, PLLC (HDR) is a consulting firm that specializes in the needs of hospice facilities.  This is an evolution of Mullinax & Cofer, Architects, PLLC allowing the firm founder, Tom Mullinax, AIA, to fulfill his dream of dedicating his entire career to the needs of hospice facilities.  Our firm has provided architectural services in one form or another since originally founding in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1982.  Specializing in the design of healthcare environments, HDR has gained a reputation for providing cost effective, functional solutions to complex healthcare problems.  Tom Mullinax, AIA has served as our Head of Healthcare Design since our initial organization.  In that role, Tom has worked as a primary architect with this firm, as well as design consultant for numerous other architectural practices throughout the country.

HDR was originally conceived as a healthcare-planning firm. Dedicated to working with small community hospitals.  After some 20 years of experience in the design of unique hospital facilities, Tom and his family weathered a family health crisis that introduced him to the concept of hospice.  He designed his first hospice in Asheboro, North Carolina.  The experience was so inspiring that he chose to move his entire family to Asheboro where he became an active member of the community.  During his years there, Tom served as a trained hospice field volunteer, a member of the Board of Directors, and ultimately as a caregiver for his mother for the last year of her life.  Having experienced hospice from all sides, Tom is uniquely qualified to speak to all types of issues that effect hospice.

Mr. Mullinax has had an opportunity to work with many state review agencies as they draft their regulations regarding hospice facilities.  He has been an invited speaker for several state and national NHPCO conferences.  He has been featured in several publications and recently worked with Jay Mahoney and Dale Lupu in drafting the National Guidelines for the design of Hospice Facilities.  Tom currently works as a design consult, helping architects and hospices around the country, identify their unique needs and developing plans that allow those hospices to provide for the citizens of their service areas.      While we provide full architectural/engineering services for those clients who request it, we typically choose to work with local architectural firms.  This collaboration help train the next generation of hospice design specialists; while providing our clients with the "best of both worlds". You receive the personal attention of a local architectural practice while also seeing design ideas that have evolved from some 15 years of experience in hospice design.
